We are currently shooting and editing our new film titled, Off the Grid. Shot in Mexico, Alaska, British Columbia, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Florida and a few surprise locations.

This fly fishing film is about places that are off the beaten path. It is about people that live the fly fishing lifestyle, not to be a name, but because fly fishing is part of their soul. It is about unspoken hatches, unknown fish, and rivers that will go unnamed. This new film will be available on DVD in July 2010.

We like WAIT FOR IT Films. But initially, we were afraid to post some of their footage. We said to them, edit Northern Steel—take out anything that isn’t “conventional.” Even though you guys are just screwing around, the old purists out there are gonna see a pink rubber worm in a couple of shots and one clip with a spoon—you gotta yank that out. We’re gonna get knocked for that…

The creator of WAIT FOR IT Films, Brent Gill, has an outlook as sharp as his videos. Not afraid to pull any punches, he said, It was almost ten years ago when I gave up all the “purist bullshit” and decided to not only master fly fishing, but also train for my FFF casting certifications, and I did. The thing that really pisses me off is when any group assumes that what they are doing is “elite, and the only elite”. This is one thing about purist fly people that seriously yank my chain. The funny thing is, is it fishing or is it just a sport? Do people graduate to fly fishing? Does some kid who maybe has four years under his waders fall into the purist league because he only has fly rods? Or does a fossil who’s been flickin’ flies for 40 years but never tells anybody that prior to the 80′s, he used to kill 25 fish a day?

To me it’s an on-going topic of conversation that usually ends up in the same place it started. It’s like Domestic vs. Import, Acoustic vs. Electric, Vegetables vs. Meat. Does fly fishing need conflict to support its well being? No. Fly fisherman do. I must really be some warped version of the fly angler, or maybe it’s all the years guiding fly fishing, teaching fly fishing, and selling fly fishing that put me into this calm disposition of “not giving a fuck”.

Huh. We kicked it around more, then someone finally said, Wait a minute—does the video make us want to go fly fishing?

Yep.
